November 2018 saw the return of China’s penultimate wine event the Decanter Fine Wine Encounter, and with so many winemakers in Shanghai at the same time, Summergate leaped at the opportunity. Featuring the wines from six producers of the world’s great wine regions and hosted by Andrew Caillard MW as well as the winemakers of each visiting estate, ‘Terroirs of the World’ at the iconic Fairmont Peace Hotel on the Bund would turn out to be an unforgettable event in Summergate’s 2018 calendar.

A short opening speech by Summergate’s new CEO, Craig Aldous, highlighted the special occasion before each winemaker introduced their wine and the dish to which it had been matched.

Dave Roper, Villa Maria’s Senior Auckland Winemaker, kicked the night off with his Villa Maria Keltern Vineyard Chardonnay 2016 a wine with an incredible track record of awards and critical successes, not too dissimilar from the New Zealand All Blacks rugby team, who would succumb to an unusual loss a few hours later.

The following course saw Charles Perrin presenting both his movie-star good looks and his Cha?teau de Beaucastel, Cha?teauneuf du Pape AOC 2014. This wine has long been regarded as one of France’s most prestigious cuvees due to both its elegance, balance and ageing potential, all of which were on full show on the night.

Next up was Crazy Fang, the lady whose name matches both her wines and mischievous personality, presenting her Kanaan Crazy Fang, Ningxia Helan Mountain 2011. Fang’s love and passion for her native Ningxia and pursuit for winemaking excellence was summed up in her telling of her personal philosophy, "seeking to cultivate perfection in wine is different from seeking to cultivate perfection in oneself".

Alongside and towering about 2 feet over Fang, Andrew Caillard MW presented his Caillard Barossa Valley Mataro 2014, one of the latest additions to the Summergate family of wines, through the lens of the front labels which feature his own oil paintings depicting the beauty and diversity of the Australian landscape.

The main course of the night would be paired to two wines, Spains’s Marqués de Riscal Barón de Chirel Red Reserva, Rioja D.O. Ca. 2013 and California’s Ridge Monte Bello Cabernet Blend, Santa Cruz Mountains 2014. Talking to a softened up crowd who had already enjoyed a few glasses of wine, Javier Yba?ez, Marqués de Riscal’s Export Director told the story of his wine “as the precursor of what could be called the “New Style” era in Rioja wines since its first vintage in 1986”.

Last but not least, John Olney, Ridge’s Chief Operating Officer and Winemaker was passed the microphone to present the Ridge Monte Bello. Monte Bello has often been considered a fine American example of a classic Bordeaux blend in which Cabernet Sauvignon predominates.

The wonderful evening ended with a charity auction of 3 cases of wine each one with a signed bottle of the dinner’s six wines. The proceeds of the auction were donated to the Yao Ming foundation to improve the lives of children in the US and in China.
