Last November was a busy month for the wine industry in Shanghai. One of the many events, organized by Summergate Fine Wine & Spirits, was the Marqués de Riscal Masterclass hosted by Andrew Caillard MW, along with the presentation of his new book Marqués de Riscal - A Travel Through Time. This new book tells the remarkable story of Marqués de Riscal through an historic tasting of vintages sourced from the winery’s Bottelería Histórica museum collection and dating all the way back to 1862.

Mr. Javier Yba?ez, Export Director at Marqués de Riscal, and Mrs. Carmen Fontes Mu?oz, the Consul General of Spain in Shanghai, were also present at the event. During the passionate opening speech, Mrs. Fontes Mu?oz mentioned that from the moment she had discovered Marqués de Riscal wines, she developed “Riojitis”, a healthy addiction for the wines of Rioja D.O. Ca.

Marqués de Riscal’s forward thinking, entrepreneurship, innovation, and respect for tradition and best practices across its 150 years of history, has led to its consideration as Rioja’s benchmark winery and remains a key reference for winemakers, wine-professionals and wine lovers across the world.

Founded in 1858, Marqués de Riscal was founded in a Bordeaux winery style. Don Camilo Hurtado de Amézaga, Marqués de Riscal, owner of vineyards and a winery on the Torrea Estate (Elciego), hired Jean Pineau, a winemaker at Chateau Lanessan, on behalf of the Diputación, to advise the Alava winemakers. Due to the high costs of Pineau′s project, all of the local producers rejected it. The sole exception was Don Camilo who, with a blind faith in those systems, decided to build his new winery.

In 1895, Marqués de Riscal was awarded the diploma of honour as a non-French wine at the Bordeaux Exhibition. In the first quarter of the 20th Century, Marqués de Riscal began to cover its bottles with a golden wire net, a measure taken in order to avoid falsifications. Nowadays, this golden wire net is one of the recognized symbols of the brand.

The City of Wine, a complex site devoted to making, caring and studying wine, is an ambitious project undertaken in the Spanish wine scene. Marqués de Riscal has merged the concepts of tradition and modernity, achieving a perfect integration between the old facilities and this new building designed by Frank O. Gehry. Currently, the winery has vineyards in three producing areas, namely, D.O. Ca. Rioja, D.O. Rueda and Tierra De Castilla Y León, in which its old vines contribute to produce unique wines.

Each of the five wines at the masterclass were specially selected by Marqués de Riscal to showcase the winery’s innovative mindset, such as the Frank Gehry Selection 2012 and the Marqués de Riscal 150 Anniversary. Barón de Chirel Verdejo Vi?as Centenarias 2016, a white wine made of Verdejo grapes produced in very old vines with more than one hundred years of age, was another stand out, displaying an outstanding aromatic intensity. The event’s selection of wines represented a true benchmark tasting of Spanish wine.

The book Marqués de Riscal – A Travel Through Time, tells us the remarkable story of this century-old Spanish cellar, holding the message that those who lead the world are not the ones that remain the same, but those who are able to learn over time and guide their way through innovation.
